Cost: 4
Ability Type: Meditative Technique
Related Skill: Meditation
Prerequisites: Meditation 4 and Advanced Casting

Through a study of advanced Spellcasting techniques you have learnt to externalise parts of your spells during casting, relying on runes to anchor key elements while you concentrate on the spell at large – making your casting more reliable and your spells more refined.

In order to use runes in this way you must have access to a runic item specially created for the purpose and you must spend time acclimatising yourself to the particular runes involved, their layout and the feel of the item as a whole – a process known as attunement.

Initially you can only be attuned to a single item as a time, but as your skill at meditation grows, the number of focus items you can be simultaneously attuned to increases also. If your Meditation skill is between 7 and 9 you can be attuned to two separate items, and if your Meditation skill is 10 or higher you can be attuned to three items at a time.

Attunement requires a Meditation skill check with target dependant on the item in question and takes about an hour. Once successfully attuned to an item, you may use that item to enhance your casting until you chose to attune something else in its place. Attempting to attune yourself to a new item but failing the skill check still cancels your attunement to any item you previously had attuned yourself to in that 'slot'.

Attuned focus runes are faintly visible to any form of astral vision that is capable of sensing general spells and become clearly visible to astral vision when they are being used in spellcasting. If an item marked with focus runes is enchanted, the runes visibly glow – providing Illumination equal to 10% of the spell's Power (round up).
