Primary Stat: Empathy
Difficulty Modifier: x4

The Spellcasting Skill covers both casting and targeting magic - with a single Skill Check used to determine whether or not a given Spell is cast successfully, and also used as the attack or defence total if that spell constitutes an Attack or is used as a Reaction (only applicable to Reflex spells). In addition the spell's Casting Total, i.e. the result of the Skill Check made to cast it, may be relevant when considering other interactions with it, such as detection, resistance or dispelling.

Casting a spell normally requires the caster to make complicated hand-gestures and speak strange half-words that, together with the force of their will, form the spell from magical Power that they Channel into the nearby Astral Plane. In practical terms this means that Spellcasting cannot be combined with other actions that require use of the character's voice (including both Vocal Techniques and normal speech) or hands (such as most Attacks).

A character's hands do not have to be empty when casting, waving the objects they're holding around is generally considered acceptable - provided they're not too bulky (GM's discretion, but casting while carrying another person or a table or something is likely to end in tears).

While most Spells are only unlocked by purchasing Spell Groups, having the Spellcasting skill at level 1 or more provides immediate access to four basic Cantrips: Fire Snap, Gentle Breeze, Conjure Ice and Strong Arm.
