Markeitus

The gambler then revealed his final card and the goddess laughed out loud at such audacity. She stood then and walked to his side, embracing him and spoke, saying ‘Here then, is your reward, o greatest of rogues.’

Markeitus is an Angel, granted immortality by Lucia for beating her in a game of cards. As might be expected, beating the Goddess of Luck required that he bend the rules somewhat and the fact that he did so without her being able to sense it, but was perfectly candid about his deception afterwards was enough to also win her love.

Thanks to his remarkable skill at deception and trickery, Markeitus is generally known as the Angel of Illusions, though he serves as a patron to all tricksters, jokers and gamblers - honouring those who combine all three most of all.

Although his true appearance is unknown, and likely varies with every manifestation, he is most often represented as a roguish jester, bearing a sword in one hand and a handful of cards in the other (five aces is traditional).

Worshippers bear various tokens in his honour, though they are always known as Lucia's Blessing, and take the form of a dishonest token of luck - such as a six-sided die with a seven on one of its sides, a coin with heads on both faces or a card that is both ace and joker, depending on orientation.

Amongst his worshippers, it is often felt that a truly great trick or con should include Lucia's Blessing at some point in its execution, serving to gain her favour whilst also giving the mark fair warning (if he is keen enough to take note of it) and showing off the trickster's skills.

His followers treat the Code of Markeitus as their guide, a decision that is absolutely guaranteed to land them in serious trouble.
