Nelonia is comprised of a large number of semi-independent states; the precise number shifts as states are created and dissolved due to warfare or political agreement and currently stands at twenty-two.

Types of State

  • Virae, meaning ‘Blood Land’, describes a state that is the homeland of a particular faction. States of this kind are directly controlled by the faction in question and other factions have no authority within the state.
  • Danrae, Tolrae and Yenrae mean ‘Second Land’, ‘Third Land’ and ‘Forth Land’ and describe states that have been firmly claimed by a faction, either through warfare or some form of political agreement. Although these states are not part of the faction’s ‘Blood Land’ they still enjoy complete authority over them. Conquered states of this kind are normally absorbed into the factions Hanrae after a period of time.
  • Pelrae means ‘Contested Land’ and is the name given to any state whose owner is in doubt. In order for a state to become Pelrae it must have no clear dominance by any one faction – that is as soon as a single faction is strong enough to oust the majorty of oposition and establish a functional government the state becomes Danrae, Tolrae or Yenrae to that faction.
  • Hanrae or ‘Pact Land’ is a rare form of Nelonian state where a general agreement has been reached that the state should remain neutral and under the control of no single faction. In general this means that either a coalition of factions controls the state or that it contains something of such great value that no one faction can be allowed to control it.
  • Torae is ‘Shattered Land’; a state that has been made largely uninhabitable and worthless and is thus claimed by no faction. Unless a Torae state is claimed and rebuilt it will eventually ceace to be considered part of Nelonia – becoming instead simply nomansland.
