Vala Mantyn is a minor city-state occupying most of habitable land on the island of [[Mantynae]], and is a member of the loose local alliance known as the [[Crescent States]].

Like most of the Crescent States, the culture of Vala Mantyn is dominated by sea-trade - and its government is a republican oligarchy, ruled by a council of merchant families known as the [[Captains of Mantynae]]. For most of its history, the founding family of [[Mantynar]] has chaired this council, with the head of the house taking on the, largely honorary, position of [[First Captain of Vala Mantyn|First Captain]]. Since Mantynae is sparsely populated and relatively poor compared to its larger neighbours, the majority of the city's trade is consolidated under the [[Mantyn Trading Company]] and managed directly by the Captains.

Thanks to its mountainous terrain and treacherous coastline, Vala Mantyn has never been successfully invaded and its adventurous sailors are regarded with respect throughout the Crescent, despite the state itself being fairly insignificant.
