New page

Narestia is a sizeable city in the [[Serra Mountains]], well-fortified against enemy attacks, but relatively welcoming to small groups of travellers.

After the fall of their other cities to the armies of the [[Golden Land]], Narestia is now the final stronghold of the once-powerful [[Aestrani]] people and this knowledge hangs over the city like a shadow, colouring the lives of all its people. Known throughout their long history for their love of the arcane, the Aestrani now see their mastery of magic as their legacy - believing it will live on after they themselves die - and so showing little interest in anything more mundane.

As a result, Narestia is a strange and gloomy place, a sprawling maze of brooding mage-towers, ancient libraries, ritual sites and moldering catacombs with narrow, twisted streets that frequently run into tunnels burrowed deep under the surrounding mountains. The many volcanic springs and vents that dot the valley cloak the city in a miasma of steam and smoke, giving it an other-worldly aspect and making it, and its inhabitants, seem already more than halfway to being ghosts.
