Drift is a tiny, floating town that exists within the [[Stone Flow]] on the [[Plane of Varys]]. The town moves constantly and has almost no contact with outsiders, meaning that to most of Varys' population it is little more than a peculiar legend.

Using powerful elemental magics the town is able to move freely within the Flow, wandering here and there at the direction of the [[Drift Guide|Guide]] - a priest of [[Taramis]] who is skilled in the art of Divination. The magics that allow the town to move are cast by the [[Drift Origin|Origin]], a priestess who has power over all four basic elements (Earth, Fire, Air and Water).

The town's traditions call for the most magically able boy and girl in each generation to be trained for the roles of Guide and Origin, taking on the titles when they come of age and are married to one another. At this point the previous couple retire and take up the training of the next generation, so continuing the cycle.

Although the Guide and the Origin have a great deal of actual and symbolic importance to Drift, they have little actual authority within the town outside of their specific duties. Instead the town is governed by a council of male elders, some of whom were once Guides but also including other priests and high-status professions such as hunters.
