By examining certain elements of a person's Astral presence, Identify attempts to generate a unique profile of that individual that can later be of use to various forms of magic. This profile, known as a Mental Impression, is roughly equivalent to simply knowing a person's name and face – it provides no special insight into their character. However, it is sufficient to allow various mentally-targeted effects to seek out that person in the future.

If the spell succeeds in identifying someone who the caster already had a Mental Impression of, that impression is renewed and the caster will immediately recognise that person for who they are (or at least who they believed them to be when last they identified them).
