Heartstone

The Heartstone was a sacred artefact of immense power once located at the centre of the Plane of Varys. Its exact purpose and origins are unknown, but most legends concerning it agree that it was placed there by the long-forgotten race that first crafted the plane itself.

During the Battle of the Shining Gate at the end of the Fifth Age the Demon Hjae Sarria touched the Heartstone and was reduced to dust by it - a fate shared by all who those who so dared. However she had somehow prepared herself for this moment and succeeded in channelling a vast amount of Chaos energy into the stone in the instant of her death. This infusion remained undetected throughout the Sixth Age, but became apparent during the Age of Strife when the Heartstone transformed into the terrible Heart of Chaos.
