Devouring Mist

The Devouring Mist was a horrible work of magic somehow unleashed during the great wars between Law and Chaos that took place on Varys during the Seventh Age. The mist rose up from the ground in the eastern part of the Lahrus Plains and dissolved everything it touched - turning the once-fertile land into a lifeless hellscape. The great city of Barrastus that had once stood here was annihilated almost overnight and the land itself was reduced to hills of scoured, black, glassy rock and stinking pits of acidic muck. The area affected by the mist has since become known as the Black Hills and remains a lasting testament to the horrors of the mist.
