One of the most important Skills in Dragonsilver, Awareness represents a character's ability to quickly assess their surroundings, spot fine details and put these clues together to form an accurate picture of events nearby. It is most often associated with vision, but can be based on any of the character's senses.

Typically the GM will call for an Awareness Check any time a character has a chance to spot some kind of clue nearby, but might miss it. Noticing scratch marks on a floor, indicating furniture has been moved (or perhaps a secret door), spotting an ambusher lurking in some nearby undergrowth, hearing an ally some distance away calling for aid or detecting a peculiar scent in the air that might indicate a poisonous gas would all call for an Awareness check.

More obvious information about a character's surroundings, such as seeing that there's a castle nearby, or noticing someone standing in plain sight on the path ahead, would typically not call for a check - unless speed is a factor (its not a matter of whether you notice the dragon, but whether you spot it before it breathes fire on you) or they are somehow obscured (darkness or thick fog, for example).
