The town is named for the Esten River upon which it is built. This river flows South into the Dalel Valley which, in turn, flows into the [[Sea of Souls]] in Endon.

Death of Mithrilanda

At the end of the [[Sixth Age]] [[Solandria]]'s twin sister [[Sulansis]] reappeared and asked to meet with her sister to discuss a reconciliation. Believing that this must be a trap [[Mithrilanda]] tricked her ally into missing the meeting and, disguised as the [[God]]dess of Light, she went to meet with Sulansis herself.

There Sulansis attacked Mithrilanda with the [[Dragonclaw Spear]] a powerful weapon formed from the essence of the dragon [[Benethyarr]]. Seeing that she bled silver, Sulansis realised her mistake but believing Mithrilanda slain, she took her [[Dreaming Sword|sword]] and fled.

The blow did not kill Mithrilanda however, instead forcing her into an ethereal, dream-like state. While trapped in this half-living dream she forgot her own identity and such was her power that all of [[Reshomme]] forgot her as well.

During the [[Eighth Age]] her wandering spirit spoke with various powerful female mages - seeking a doorway back into the real world, but instead simply driving her conduits mad. Eventually the [[Mantoni]]an [[Sorcerer Adventurer|Sorceress]] [[Aesha Lehtranna]] was able to channel the Goddess successfully and in time she awoke to her true nature.

As thanks for the Lady Lehtranna's help, Mithrilanda aided the [[Knights of the Silver Cross]] in their quest to lift the [[Dark Curse]] laid upon their king. Eventually Sulansis' minions were defeated and the Goddess of Darkness herself was banished and much of her power broken. At this time Mithrilanda was able to reclaim her blade.

The 'death' of Mithrilanda also coincided with the betrayal of her high priest - who shattered the [[Solinast]] with the aid of a great [[Nelonia]]n ritual.

Church of the Bright Path

The first [[Saralot|Saralonian]] colonists to arrive on [[Kotar]] were followers of [[Solandria]], drawn to the mysterious island by visions of the temples on the [[Bright Path]]. After making their pilgramage to the Bright Path and the great temple of [[Lothae Sol]] many pilgrims remained in Kotar to guide future travellers to enlightenment. In time these first settlers founded the Church of The Bright Path; and this cult of Solandria remains one of the cornerstones of Kotari life to this day.

The Church wields considerable influence throughout Kotar; although the centre of its power lies in the religious capital of [[Koloth]], near the temple of [[Toloth Vae]] – first step of The Bright Path. Worship of Solandria is fundamental to much of Kotari life and the Church is greatly respected by all Kotari. In addition the Church is accorded much respect abroad, thanks to its strong links to worhsip of Solandria on the mainland.

The Church of The Bright Path has no real enemies on Kotar; the worship of [[Sulansis]] is unheard of there and the Church peacefully coexists with the religions of [[Hellani]], [[Faraya]], [[Taramis]] and [[Yaasha]]. The nearest the Church has to a rival on Kotar is in fact the [[Landholders’ Council]] in [[Vendoko]], since both groups have a strong claim to leadership of the island.

Cinnamon was assigned to [[Aesha Lehtranna]] on joining the Knights of the Silver Cross. Horses owned by the Order of the Moon are bred by the [[Royal Order of the Dragon|Order of the Dragon]] but only given basic training: their training is completed by the [[Noble Order of the Moon|Order of the Moon]]. While this does not include much combat training, they are taught to be calm under all circumstances, making them excellent mounts for even relatively inexperienced riders. The Mantonian Stock Horse was originally bred from the Dantonian Horse by the Order of the Dragon, but is smaller and lighter than this parent stock. It is generally considered an excellent 'all-rounder'.

One of the twelve [[Mantoni|Mantonian]] [[Royal Orders]]. The OoTD were founded from the remnants of the [[Danton|Dantonian]] Army of the Dragon. They are unusual in that they do not offer training in magic to their members, and as such it is a rare Dragon warrior who can cast even basic spells; and that they eschew the worship of deities, despite acknowledging their existence.

The reasons why the Dragon do not allow the worship of [[God]]s are lost in the mists of time, but prior to [[Mithrilanda|recent revelations]] there were three philosophies current in the Order as to the purpose of the Vow of Atheism. The first are those who believed the Order had been abandoned by a god in times past and so chose not to follow another; those who felt that the Vow was tradition and probably would have been happy to change it; and those whose [[philosophical atheism]] led them to the conclusion that [[Humanity]] was better off without the influence, however benign, of extra-planar entities of awesome power whose motivations were not only unknown but essentially unknowable. [[Lucian Albrecht]] is an example of the third group.

Because of their lack of magical training and absence of patron deity the Dragon are generally considered to be the weakest of the Royal Orders, although they are generally recognised as being strong in terms of direct military might and have the finest heavy cavalry in Mantoni.

The Order of the Dragon is strongly linked to the [[Noble Order of the Moon]], who provide magical troops to the Dragon's armies, greatly compensating for their main weakness. Other associated Orders include the [[Noble Order of the Dreaming Sword]] and the [[Noble Order of the Golden Claw]].

Citadel of the Silver Dragon

The most important [[Royal Order of the Dragon]] stronghold outside [[Great Heldmar]], the Citadel of the Silver Dragon is an ancient, eldritch, structure. In peacetime, many of the Dragon's and the [[Noble Order of the Moon|Moon]]'s forces are quartered here.

It is also an important training ground for both orders. [[Lucian Albrecht]] and [[Aesha Lehtranna]] were both posted here prior to their assignment to the [[Knights of the Silver Cross]].

Blades of the Temple

A newly-formed [[sect]] of the [[Noble Order of the Dreaming Sword]], the Blades of the Temple are worshippers of [[Mithrilanda]] who have sworn to defend their faith and its lands. Currently the focus of the sect's activities is the [[Temple of Mithrilanda]] near [[Estenfells]], although they also have a strong interest in the [[Citadel of the Silver Dragon]].

Many Blades of the Temple feel a strong personal loyalty to the Sorceress [[Aesha Lehtranna]] since she is the High Priestess of Mithrilanda, and it seems likely that she will be given command of the sect, if she chooses to accept it.

The sect's uniform is predominantly purple and silver, since those are the colours most strongly associated with Mithrilanda.

The tears that followed her rage are said to have formed the rivers and oceans of the world and together with [[Menkharra|Menkharra's]] blood brought forth the chaotic life that eventually gave rise to [[Humanity]].

Alas is a powerful but distant [[God]]; there are [[:Category:Followers of Alas|many cults]] dedicated to her throughout [[Reshomme]] but she seems to take little interest in their activities - beyond rewarding acts of vengeance with [[Power]]. A semi-sentient artefact of incredible power, located in a gigantic [[Citadel of the Trenkytis|citadel]] in the centre of [[Treneth]]. It resembles a massive, semi-liquid gem that shines with a blinding crimson light. The Trenkytis is without doubt the single most powerful object on the entire [[Core Plane]].

The [[Sulaim]] were once able to manipulate the power of the Trenkytis and one faction, the [[Sisterhood of the Crimson Shard]], used this power to bind the dragon [[Benethyarr]] - creating the [[Dragonbone Spear]] and [[Dragonbone Keep]].

Recently, in an attempt to tame its power once more and subdue the tremendous magical defences of the citadel, the [[God]]dess [[Mithrilanda]] bound herself magically to the artefact - with both gaining a degree of influence over the other.

Also known as Dantoni or the Dantonian Empire. Danton lay in the centre of [[Amethgare]] and was a blessed land; rich, green and fertile.

Danton was established at the end of the [[Dawn Wars]] by a great general of [[Humanity]] of the same name. Later the discovery of the [[Solinast]] added greatly to the fledgeling nation's power and prosperity and allowed it to forge a great empire of Human states, dominating [[Amethgare]] completely.

At the height of its power Danton was a peaceful and prosperous state, a land of poetry and philosophy that upheld the ideals of [[Solandria]] and [[Mithrilanda]].

When the Solinast was destroyed and [[Sulansis]] rose, Danton was thrown into chaos, beset by treachery and civil strife and finally invaded and conquered by Sulansis' [[Army of Darkness]].

Although Sulansis' forces were eventually defeated at the [[Battle of the Stars]], Danton had been occupied for many years and its people and culture were scattered to the winds. The armies of Humanity were too weak to reclaim Danton from the [[Orcs]] who now held it, but this became a moot point when the land itself was burnt away in a huge fire-storm, transforming the once green land into the [[Dragon Desert]] and annihilating its occupiers.

Many remnants of Danton's great culture still persist, centuries after its demise, most notably within the modern kingdom of [[Mantoni]]. The [[Royal Family]] of Mantoni claim direct descent from the Kings of Danton and the [[Royal Orders]] are primarily drawn from the surviving armies of Danton.

The word Danton means Shield of the Sun (literally: sunshield), a title awarded to the great human general Mhakan (also known as Mhakan of the Golden Shield) during the Dawn Wars. Dantoni simply means land of Danton. Danton/Mhakan led a powerful warrior cult of Solandria and forged alliances with countless other human factions during the final years of the wars, finally leading mankind to victory.

It was Vellamni who blinded Sulansis and cast her into the [[Outermost Darkness]].

Although Vellamni is often consulted on matters of the heart, she is also a proud warrior who bears a great [[Valestakha|sword of fire]] and is revered by various warrior sects for her passion.

She appears as a beautiful, voluptuous woman with hair of flame. Common symbols of Vellamni are The Heart and Moon (for single followers), The Intertwined Hearts (for couples) and The Burning Heart (for warrior cults). Her followers obey the [[Code of Vellamni]].

Notable worship of Taramis includes the [[Royal Order of The Raven]] in [[Mantoni]], the [[Church of the Traveller]] in [[Sular]] and the [[Cult of Taramis]] in [[Saralot]].

Taramis is one of the few Gods to have travelled beyond the [[Sphere]] of [[Reshomme]] since the spheres were scattered at the end of the [[Gods' War]]. Draxos is the [[God]] of Pain, Suffering and Sacrifice. Known for his cunning, manipulative nature as well as his great cruelty, Draxos is a master of subtle, long-term planning and it is not uncommon to find him blamed for every great tragedy in [[Reshomme]]'s long history. The true extent of his involvement with these events will probably never be known, but moderately convincing theories connect him to the fall of the [[Amma]] and the death of [[Menkharra]] as well as to the destruction of [[Danton]] and the rise of [[Sulansis]], as well as to many other such things.

Draxos is most often pictured as a bald, bearded man in a black robe - but if truth be told little is known about his true appearance. Stories of Draxos feature him in many forms, sometimes appealing and at other times horrific or monstrous. His symbol is the Burning Skull.

Organised cults of Draxos are illegal in most civilised lands, and worship of him is generally secretive. Priests of Draxos are shadowy, elusive figures - manipulating events behind the scenes to bring the greatest suffering possible. His followers adhere to the simple [[Code of Draxos]].

Menkharra

Menkharra was one of the first [[God|Gods]] to arrive at [[Reshomme]], his arrival there marks the beginning of the [[First Age]].

He and his companions were engaged in the [[Gods' War]] and sought a place to rest and recover their strength, and so settled for a while at Reshomme. Later they found themselves trapped there when the [[Sphere]]s drifted apart through the [[Wild Sea]]. Menkharra is remembered as the creator of the world, since it was his magic that first brought forth the [[Plane]]s within [[Reshomme]].

Menkharra's lover was [[Alas]] and she was present when the [[Amma]] took the [[Banesword]] and used it to kill him. After [[Alas]] slew the [[Amma]] and ruined the [[World of Order]] it was Menkharra's blood that gave rise to the forests and, later, all the other plant and animal life of the world.

Menkharra's initial companions were his advisor [[Hollus]], his brother [[Grendarra]], his herald [[Morivar]], the sisters [[Faraya]] and [[Bethtarr]], [[Yaasha]], [[Taramis]]. They arrived at [[Reshomme]] with a pair of allies, the warrior sisters [[Alas]] and [[Vellamni]].

It was Menkharra who created the [[Amma]] using his blade, the [[Banesword]], to cut himself and drawing forth the [[Amma]] from the spilled blood. This marks the beginning of the [[Second Age]].

Menkharra's death at the hands of the [[Amma]] marks the beginning of the [[Third Age]].

Amma

The Amma were the children of the [[Gods]], created by [[Menkharra]] from his own blood at the end of the [[First Age]].

Throughout the [[Second Age]] the Amma lived in harmony with the [[Gods]], building great cities and many other wonders. This was a golden age, where the [[Gods]] and Amma lived together and art of all kind flourished.

Although the Gods taught the Amma many things and granted them power, eventually some of the Amma began to feel that the Gods were denying them the true power that was their birthright. These Amma turned on the Gods and slew Menkharra while he was sleeping, using his own sword - the [[Banesword]]. [[Alas]], who slept at his side, awoke before the Amma could strike her down as well and she took the Banesword from them and used to it kill all the Amma and destroy everything they had ever wrought.

The [[Saralot Thesis]] teaches that [[Humanity]] are the Amma reborn, cursed with mortality until they can make amends to the Gods.

[[Solandria]] and [[Sulansis]] were both originally Amma.

[[Hellani]]'s mother was an Amma and was slain by [[Alas]].

Zhe Scabbard

This finely made silver scabbard was created by the [[Dragons|dragon]] [[Benethyarr]] as a gift for [[Sorcerer Adventurer|Sorceress]] [[Aesha Lehtranna]].

It was created at the [[Citadel of the Poison Fang]] in [[Hezh Tro Khe]], [[Nelonia]] and is designed to hold Aesha's strange and magical [[Aesha's sword|silver sword]].

The scabbard bears the [[Danton]]ian rune 'Zhe' which means change. The Zhe rune resembles a pair of arrows, or a 'Z' shape but in this case it has been carved in such a way that it can also be read as the initials AL.

The scabbard contains powerful magic designed to link the spirit of the Sorceress Aesha Lehtranna with her spiritual other self, [[Knight Aesha Lehtranna]]. Quite what this means in practical terms is a little unclear thus far, although Knight Aesha is currently haunting the scabbard quite happily.

Great Heldmar

The capital city of [[Mantoni]], Great Heldmar is the largest fortification on [[Teth]] - being composed of twelve [[Royal Citadels|citadels]] and numerous towers and walls built atop the [[Halla Plateau]] and straddling the [[Marai Ravine]].

The Town of Heldmar first achieved true notoriety with the [[Battle of the Stars]] at the height of the [[Wars of Strife]] during the [[Seventh Age]]. Following this great victory the town was renamed Great Heldmar and the victorious armies each built a great citadel so that Heldmar would endure as a great fortress of the [[Amethyar]] forever. These armies became the backbone of Mantonian society; the [[Royal Orders]].

Over the years the city grew beyond the reach of the citadels, and to ensure that it remained unassailable a new series of walls and [[Noble Towers|towers]] were constructed, with each tower home to one of the new [[Noble Orders]].

A Void-forged blade of fire; Onostothorin is essentially part of the [[Elemental Plane of Fire]] carved out using unimaginable power and bound to a stone sword whose integrity is maintained through a link to the [[Elemental Plane of Earth]].

Onostothorin's power is also linked both to the [[Banesword]] of [[Alas]] and to [[Vellamni|Vellamni's]] [[Valestakha|sword of fire]].

Onostothorin's current owner is a [[Mantoni|Mantonian]] [[Warrior Adventurer]] [[Lucian Albrecht]] and was given to him by the [[First Blademaster of Nentreneth]]. [[Lucian Albrecht|Lucian]] is also in possession of [[Onostothorin's Scabbard]].

In practical terms Onostothorin is a huge, two-handed sword that is magically light and easy to handle and inflicts massive physical and fire damage. Although the entirety of the sword is surrounded by raging fire, its wielder and his clothing and carried items are immune to the flame.

Onostothorin is an item of great power, poorly understood by its current owner. The full extent of its energy is hinted at by the fact that it briefly powered the [[Great Seal of Aethleas]]. It was soul-bonded to Lucian by the Dragon [[Benethyarr]] after Lucian's soul was grievously wounded in a battle beneath [[Hightemple]].

Three similar blades, bound to the other three elements, also exist. They are [[Elvondorjust]], [[Sylerandyth]], and [[Lunstorgorthin]].

Lanaric's Stick

A magical staff owned by Knight [[Lanaric Kael]]. It had the capability to 'contain' bound spirits, allowing Lanaric to draw on their magical power for his own use. Lanaric had a bad habit of attempting to put any wandering spirit into his staff; however it originally contained two demons, [[Loram]] and Seth, who was assimilated by Loram.

Loram escaped at the [[Tower of Kallerain]], possessing Lanaric and teleporting to safety while [[Jerall Markant]] and [[Kerick Draenor]] discussed whether they should kill him or not. He was somewhat aided in this by [[Aesha Lehtranna]], who felt that killing him would be a rather poor return for his earlier assistance at the Tower.

Karantas

The birthplace of the [[Kamarain]] race and the oldest existing nation on [[Amethgare]] (with the possible exception of [[Thalas]]). Karantas is a large and powerful country located in the south-west and shares borders with [[Lonas]] to the west, [[Berellion]] to the north and [[Mantoni]] and [[Endon]] to the east. To the south lies the [[Sea of Esharra]], to the north-west the [[Azure Sea]] and to the north-east the [[Kamarain Gulf]].

Karantas has always proclaimed itself the true home of [[Humanity]], although it accepts only [[Amethyar]] as truly human and considers the Kamarain to be the purest of these races. Traditionally a stubborn and aggressive nation, Karantas has engaged in many wars with its neighbours in an attempt to either drive out the [[Eldren]] 'invaders' of Lonas and Endon or to subjugate the 'impure' half-breeds of Mantoni.

Since Berellion was once part of Karantas, it refused to acknowledge the breakaway state as a true nation - preferring instead to count it as a collection of rebel cities that would eventually be reclaimed.

The recent crushing defeat of Karantas at the hands of Mantoni, Berellion, Endon, [[Estalon]] and [[Isontar]] has forced a reversal of this policy however, as well as adding several more Karantian cities to Berellion and forming the borderlands with Endon and Mantoni into a buffer-state known as the [[Regency of Haelenfels]].

For centuries Karantas was a repressive theocracy ruled by the [[Karantian Cult of Alas|Cult of Alas]] based at [[Hightemple]] but the death of the [[Angel of Alas]] and sudden appearance of the [[Black Citadel]] annihilated the cult's leadership and led to [[Patriarch Tarankaer|General Tarankaer]], the highest-ranking survivor of the Karantian army, declaring himself Patriarch. The current capital of Karantas is [[Makar]].

Even after the fall of the old government it is still illegal to worship any [[God]] other than [[Alas]], although those cities that are now part of Berellion or the Regency enjoy much greater religious freedom.

Karonleas

The 'City at the Edge of Reality', Karonleas was built by [[Taramis]] and the [[Dunoln]] to facilitate travel between the [[Plane]]s of [[Reshomme]] and, more importantly, to allow Taramis and [[Schiraman]] to leave Reshomme entirely and travel through the [[Wild Sea]] in search of the [[Hub Sphere]].

After the annihilation of the [[Dunoln Empire]] during the [[Seventh Age|Age of Strife]], Karonleas is believed to be the only surviving Dunoln city.

Karonleas is the only significant structure on its Plane, which lies amongst the [[Fringes]]. The city is built around a series of concentric, circular walls - each higher than the last. At its centre lies the Heart of Karonleas, a great, blue, gemstone monolith that contains the souls of the city's population as well as controlling and animating its guardians and allowing easy travel to all the other Planes.

The city is largely empty, abandoned by its people during the terrible upheavals of the Seventh Age who now wait, suspended within the Heart until the day comes when it is safe for them to live again.

Army of the Viper

Battle of the Stars

This great battle was the turning point of the [[Wars of Strife]] where the last stand of the armies of [[Danton]] and the [[New Kingdoms]] at the fortress town of [[Great Heldmar|Heldmar]] became their sudden victory against [[Sulansis]]' [[Army of Darkness]].

Three factors are believed to have been especially important to this unexpected outcome; firstly the appearance of the [[Gems of Magnas]], secondly the strategic position of Heldmar itself and finally the sudden arrival of the [[Karantas|Karantian]] [[Army of the Viper]].

Initially the Karantian forces dispatched to Heldmar were simply to observe the battle, and potentially to dispatch the weaker of the two forces once the fight was over. However the Viper's generals, seeing the size and strength of the [[Sulaim]] forces, eventually came to the decision that if Sulansis was not stopped here that her armies would one day crush their homeland as well. The sudden arrival of a fresh army attacking from the rear proved a demoralising and decisive blow to the attacking forces, already weakened by the desperate resolve of the city's defenders and the powerful magic of the Gems of Magnas.

A great, black orb that contained tremendous magical energy; the Sulinast was sacred to [[Sulansis]], the [[God]]dess of Darkness, and was believed to contain a significant portion of her personal power.

The Sulinast was kept a closely-guarded secret by the [[Sulaim]] of [[Nelonia]] for centuries following its discovery in the [[Sixth Age]]. Many Sulaim believe it was their discovery of the sacred orb that woke the goddess after her long banishment in the [[Outermost Darkness]] and certainly it was the orb that provided them with their initial contact with her.

The power of the Sulinast was used widely by Nelonia during the Sixth Age to fashion their huge underground cities and survive in the hostile subterranean environment. It was only through this divine aid that Nelonia was able to survive as a nation at all, and this forged a powerful bond of kinship and mutual dependence between the goddess and her newly adopted people.

At the start of the [[Seventh Age]] the Sulinast enabled the Sulaim to go on the offensive; undermining the power of the [[Solinast]] in [[Danton]] and making it vulnerable to attack. Throughout the [[Wars of Strife]] the Sulinast provided a powerful edge for the [[Army of Darkness]] and it was also this power that destroyed [[Magnas]] during the [[War of Desolation]].

Finally, in the [[Eighth Age]], the [[Shadow Council]] used the black orb to cast the [[Dark Curse]] on the [[Mantonian Royal Family]]. This action however proved to be a step too far - since in investigating the curse the [[Knights of the Silver Cross]] uncovered the existence of the stone and finally succeeded in destroying it at [[Seck'Lor]], winning a great [[Victory of Light]] and setting light and darkness back into balance at last.

The shards of the Sulinast were taken to [[Magnas]] where the spirits residing there, along with the [[Dragon]] [[Benethyarr]], secretly disposed of them.

King of Mantoni

The King of [[Mantoni]] claims direct line of descent from the ancient royal line of [[Danton]], strengthening Mantoni's claim to be the spiritual successor to the Dantonian Empire.

Although the King commands great respect in Mantoni and is head of the [[Royal Order of the Crown]] his role is largely ceremonial. He serves as chairman of the [[Royal Council]] but does not receive a vote unless the issue is tied.

Royal Order of the Crown

One of the twelve [[Mantoni|Mantonian]] [[Royal Orders]], the Order of the Crown is very different from the other orders of [[Warrior Adventurer]]s and is composed entirely of the (extended) Mantonian [[Royal Family]]. Entry into the Order of the Crown is automatic for those with direct blood-ties to the [[King of Mantoni|King]] but those who are less closely related must still prove themselves in entrance tests - similar to the other Royal Orders.

The Order of the Crown has a very high status in Mantonian society, and its members are treated with great respect by all the other orders; however its direct authority is actually very limited and for the most part its role is to arbitrate disputes between the other orders, guard the King and his family and perform various ceremonial and diplomatic functions.
