The Star of Heldmar is a rarely-issued medal awarded in [[Mantoni]] to those who have won great victories for the nation against overwhelming odds. It is named in memory of the [[Battle of the Stars]] at [[Great Heldmar|Heldmar]], one of the turning points in the [[Wars of Strife]].

The medal itself is a small, silver shield set with four gems, a diamond in the centre surrounded by a sapphire, ruby and emerald. The gems represent the [[Gems of Magnas]] and the shield suggests the defence of the realm.

When first issued the Star of Heldmar is normally set as the centre-piece of a silver circlet, placed on the head of the recipient by the [[King of Mantoni|King]] or Queen. When wearing the medal at less formal occasions however it is normally hung from a silver ribbon and worn alongside other decorations.

Wars of Strife

A series of terrible wars that took place during and after the fall of [[Danton]] in the [[Seventh Age]]. These wars decimated much of [[Thalas]] and the [[New Kingdoms]] as [[Sulansis]]' [[Army of Darkness]] embarked on a series of long and bloody campaigns, notable for the many atrocities committed by both sides.

Rather than a desire for conquest the Wars of Strife appear to have been motivated by sheer hatred, with civilians on both sides slaughtered and whole kingdoms razed to the ground.

It is unclear for exactly how long this period of near-constant warfare persisted and histories of this age or earlier are unreliable at best. It is generally agreed that the turning point in the conflict was the [[Battle of the Stars]] at [[Great Heldmar|Heldmar]] where the [[Nelonia]]n armies were broken by an alliance of New Kingdoms troops and Dantonian exiles wielding the [[Gems of Magnas]].

Onostothorin

A Void-forged blade of fire; Onostothorin is essentially part of the [[Elemental Plane of Fire]] carved out using unimaginable power and bound to a stone sword whose integrity is maintained through a link to the [[Elemental Plane of Earth]].

Onostothorin's power is also linked both to the [[Banesword]] of [[Alas]] and to [[Vellamni|Vellamni's]] [[Valestakha|sword of fire]].

Onostothorin's current owner is a [[Mantoni|Mantonian]] [[Warrior Adventurer]] [[Lucian Albrecht]] and was given to him by the [[First Blademaster of Nentreneth]]. [[Lucian Albrecht|Lucian]] is also in possession of [[Onostothorin's Scabbard]].

In practical terms Onostothorin is a huge, two-handed sword that is magically light and easy to handle and inflicts massive physical and fire damage. Although the entirety of the sword is surrounded by raging fire, its wielder and his clothing and carried items are immune to the flame.

Onostothorin is an item of great power, poorly understood by its current owner. The full extent of its energy is hinted at by the fact that it breifly powered the [[Great Seal of Aethleas]]. It was soul-bonded to Lucian by the Dragon [[Benethyarr]] after Lucian's soul was greviously wounded in a battle beneath [[Hightemple]].

Lucian Albrecht is an archetypal honourable [[Mantoni|Mantonian]] warrior™. His interest in history borders on the obsessive. He declares his atheism in the face of [[God]]s, and thus can be regarded as somewhat self-destructive. Other indicators of psychological instability include a tendency to taunt people who are breaking his fingers; entering combats when already heavily wounded; carrying a sword that, frankly, is [[Onostothorin|quite the most disturbing piece of personal armament]] I have seen in my entire professional career. Lucian should be sectioned immediately.

Lucian's relationship with his magic sword has been strained further by using it to power an [[Great Seal of Aethleas|ancient seal]] and then going off to battle with another [[Aethleas Sword|sword]].

Lucian is also mildly peeved by the fact that his is now decisively [[Mantonian Rank System|outranked]] by everyone in his party, although he was granted the brevet rank of [[Field Knight]] in recognition of his part in smashing the [[Sullinast]].

Lucian is a Warrior Adventurer, who is presently serving with the [[Knights of the Silver Cross]]. He is on his [[Knight Quest]], to recover ancient texts relating to the orgin of the [[Royal Order of the Dragon]] from underneath the [[Dragon Desert]]. He has located some, but they were possessed by [[Shenn-Akrath]] and he has yet to excavate a putative second location. He owns a horse named [[Gilbert]].

His current location is [[Karantas]] and the [[Buffer States]], assisting with the post-war situation.

== Biography ==
Lucian Albrecht was born in the small fishing and farming community of [[Merrish]], on the west coast of [[Mantoni]]. He attended the school run there by the [[Royal Order of the Bear]], but was eventually accepted by the [[Royal Order of the Dragon]], an impressive feat for a small-town commoner. (His parents run a large apple and pork farm).

He excelled in two-handed sword training at the [[Citadel of the Silver Dragon]] and, upon promotion to the rank of Warrior, was assigned to the [[Dragon Rider Sect|Dragon Riders]] cavalry as part of the [[Army of the Dragon]] guarding the border with [[Karantas]]. During his year in the borderlands he saw action in a number of skirmishes with the Karantian [[Blackspear Cavalry]].

Impressed by his performance, his superiors recalled Lucian to [[Great Heldmar]] and transferred him to the [[Red Dragon Sect]] before assigning him to the KotSC. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to the [[Dragon Guard]] Sect and asked to keep a watchful eye on the rather erratic [[Sorcerer Adventurer|Sorceress]] [[Aesha Lehtranna]].

He remains an expert swordsman, presently wielding an [[Aethleas Sword]], although he is the designated bearer of the blade [[Onostothorin]], currently powering the [[Great Seal of Aethleas]]. In addition, he is a skilled tactician and strategist.

His hobbies include historical research, archaeology, and philosophy. He is a terrible liar. He has one sibling, [[Catharine Albrecht|Catharine]], who is a member of the [[Royal Order of the Unicorn]].

The name 'Lucian' is the masculine form of the name of the [[God]]dess of Luck, [[Lucia]]. The wisdom of naming one's child this is very much a matter for debate.

Field Knight is a Mantonian rank awarded to persons who have not completed their [[Knight Quest]] but require or deserve the rights and responsibilities associated with the rank of [[Knight Adventurer]]. [[Lucian Albrecht]] was awarded this follwong the [[Victory of Light]].

Gilbert is the horse owned by [[Lucian Albrecht]]; unlike most Orders, where a mount is considered to be the property of the Order even if retained for years, the [[Royal Order of the Dragon|Order of the Dragon]] considers them to be the property of the warrior, matching them when the [[Acolyte]] becomes a full [[Warrior Adventurer]]. Gilbert has had extensive training in combat situations.

Lord General

A rank specific to Mantoni, the Lord General is the most senior of the three generals of an Order.

Lord Generals have the automatic right to attend the [[Royal Council]], although they only receive a vote there if they are their order's nominated representative on the council - something that is quite common amongst the more militaristic orders such as the [[Royal Order of the Wolf|Wolf]] or [[Royal Order of the Dragon|Dragon]].

[[Lord General Harra]], for example, started off as just General Harra but when the previous Lord General was killed she was next in line to the rank. She was also given the Wolf's seat on the Royal Council, because the Wolf consider their Lord General to be the head of their order and believe in centralised command.

There is also a Mantonian rank of [[Lord]], which can be bestowed on someone who is also a General; However this does not make them a Lord General unless they also hold that title.

To avoid (at least some of the) confusion the title General takes precedence over the title Lord; so a respected General would always be General Whoever not Lord Whoever even if (s)he also holds that title.

Lord General can be shortened to either Lord or General, normally depending on the circumstances, but shortening it at all is actually pretty rare and normally the full title is used.

Lord Generals are powerful people, both personally and as a function of influence.

Amma

The Amma were the children of the [[Gods]], created by [[Menkharra]] from his own blood at the end of the [[First Age]].

Throughout the [[Second Age]] the Amma lived in harmony with the [[Gods]], building great cities and many other wonders. This was a golden age, where the [[Gods]] and Amma lived together and art of all kind flourished.

Although the [[Gods]] taught the [[Amma]] many things and granted them power, eventually some of the Amma began to feel that the [[Gods]] were denying them the true power that was their birthright. These Amma turned on the [[Gods]] and slew [[Menkharra]] while he was sleeping, using his own sword - the [[Banesword]]. [[Alas]], who slept at his side, awoke before the Amma could strike her down as well and she took the [[Banesword]] from them and used to it kill all the Amma and destroy everything they had ever wrought.

The [[Saralot Thesis]] teaches that [[Humanity]] are the Amma reborn, cursed with mortality until they can make amends to the [[Gods]].

[[Solandria]] and [[Sulansis]] were both originally Amma.

[[Hellani]]'s mother was an Amma and was slain by [[Alas]].
