General Knowledge covers a character's everyday understanding of the world around him and is normally used whenever the GM wishes to test whether a character knows and can recall a fact of some kind. On some occasions this may instead be covered by a more specific Skill that more closely relates to the topic at hand, but even then characters without that skill (or who have much higher General Knowledge) should typically be allowed to make a check on General Knowledge instead - though perhaps with a penalty (normally -2 to -4).
